RFC: Libertadores, Champions League Coverage
Hi all:
I just wanted to open up a conversation about the impending start to Libertadores, and to a certain extent UEFA Champions League.
Let me just be honest with you for a second: I want to keep you coming back. I don't care about site hits or anything like that. I care about comments. I care about poll votes. I can about interacting with you. That's my whole motivation for writing about the game.
What kind of coverage of these club tournaments would you like? Individual match reports? Open game threads? Daily recaps?
Are you concerned about a cluttered site? Would too much coverage of any of these events turn you off?
This is a Request For Comment.
And thank you, all. If anybody every has any feedback or just wanted to talk soccer, you can always email me at richardfarley@gmail.com.

Open Game Threads
are, without a doubt, the absolute best way to grow a site and get people to comment and keep coming back. Not only do you have conversation about the game itself, but the sidebar conversations are what builds the comradery between members.
If anything, I would suggest thinking of ways to organize threads and the bombardment of new members/commentors that are going to pop up in June. The last general soccer SBN site that I did some writing on, Golbal Futbol, BLEW UP during the Confed. Cup. I can’t imagine what a site, like this, with an active writer and the World Cup is gonna do….

Thanks ...
… I’ll comment more about this in the next comment, but it appears that Game Threads are popular, and for UEFA Champions League, a game thread on each of Tuesday and Wednesday would work well.

Game threads are one of my favorite things about SBN blogs; even if I’m not available to participate in them I love to go back and read through what everybody said as it was happening. That being said, they also require a fairly large investment from people, especially for such things as Libertadores or the current african nations cup where US coverage is almost nonexistant.
Speaking of the african nations cup, I really like the format you’ve had up the last couple days where you summarize all the matches by group. It gives me a much fuller view of the big picture while still providing enough match-specific information that my curiosity is satisfied. Thanks for the great work!
Thanks for the feedback ...
… and that would serve a good model. We can call interact with each other during the matches, I can take some time and synthesize me thoughts, and then I can write some 1,500 word diatribe based on false premises.
So the first part of that is good :)

i like the game threads for
the champions, because there are several games going on at the same time (unfortunately i won’t be able to participate as i just started working), however i think that for the libertadores because of the weird scheduling by conmebol a better way is to do a weekly roundup highlitghting the best game of the week.
You’re doing a great work in the blog, Richard.

I Want It All! And I Want It Now!...
Seriously though, while I wouldn’t consider myself a fan of overly cluttered sites, I am getting fairly adept at skipping around things I don’t want to read, or follow to closely, and finding things I do want to know about. And I am really enjoying the depth of coverage you produce. It tends to make for one-stop shopping, as it were, which is another plus (I’m all about efficiency in my ’net surfing).
So bring it on!!! The more, the merrier. (Though I have to ask, “how do you find the time?” I can’t even manage to keep my checkbook up to date.)
