Togo Shooting

The Togo team bus has been attacked while in Angola.  Reports are machine gun fire sprayed the team bus.  Players were hit, and there are rumors of a fatality.

These are the type of stories that are too important for me to write articles about.  If anybody wants to talk about it, please use this thread.

I'm not the WSDigest guy on this one.  I'm following this along with you.

Awful

Incomprehensible.

Not mediocre. Right about average

I read that

the driver (who was Angolan) was killed, but no players/coaches have died, as of yet. At least four coaches and two players are hurt, but the two footballers from English clubs on the team are okay, it is reported.

Tragic and shameful. Football should bring countries/people together.

I heard that, too

This was supposed to be about football, and now a family in Angola’s lost a loved one.

Togo may pull out of the tournament

it’s just horrible that an sporting event has to report this type of story

It sounds like they will

From what another person told me, Adebayor’s going to lead a team meeting tonight. They’ll decide them. Apparently in this voice “you could tell” that Togo’s likely to go home.

Whatever they decide, I’m sure everybody will understand.

They need to move those matches to Luanda.

One club ...

… in England is rumored to be moving in that direction, but it’s a club that didn’t want their players going in the first place (Portsmouth).

If a club uses the first hours after this tragedy to request players back, I’m going to carry a negative connotation of that club for a long time.

Goal.com is reporting ...

… the CAF officials are in “crisis” talks about whether the CAF will continue or not.

One thought: If the tournament’s cancelled, the terrorists win.

Another thought: The concept of “win” is secondary to lives. This is one front of a bigger battle.

I’m not as familiar with the political situation in Angola as I used to be. Is this assumed to be the work of rebel guerrillas? Is there any official news of motives?

Thanks. Doesn’t sound like things are going to be clear any time soon.

And I hope ...

… that Tom, who runs that site, is going to be on one of my podcasts over the next two weeks, as there are a lot of pieces he’s gone in the last two weeks which I have found compelling.

pitchinvasion.net is one of my favorite sites.
