Nigeria Hires Lagerback

Former Sweden national team coach Lars Lagerbäck will be named Nigeria's coach on Wednesday.

Former Sweden national team coach Lars Lagerbäck will be named Nigeria's coach on Wednesday.

Nigeria will officially fill their mens national team's coaching vacancy on Wednesday when Lars Lagerbäck is named head coach.

Lagerbäck is best known as the head coach of the Swedish national team during their excursions into the knock-out rounds of the 2002 and 2006 World Cups.  Under his guidance Sweden made every major tournament from 2000 to 2008.

He left the Swedish position after the national failed to qualify for South Africa.

The 61-year-old Swede reported beat out Sven-Göran Eriksson, Bruno Metsu, Ratomir Dujkovic and Glenn Hoddle for the position.

He replaces Shaibu Amodu, who guided Nigeria to a third place finish in January's Cup of Nations, though the Nigerians played relatively poorly during the tournament.

Lagerbäck will head the Super Eagles in June at the World Cup, where Nigeria is grouped with Argentina, South Korea and Greece.
