Predictions

United 3-1, Madrid 2-0. Unfortunately, i won’t be around for the games as i have actual work to do today

I will be ...

Focusing on the United-Milan match, though I will have an eye on the Bernabeu. I will be recording tomorrow’s EPL Talk podcast right have the final whistle, so I will need to focus my attention there.

We're getting close ...

… teams are on the pitch in Madrid, walking out of the tunnel in Manchester.

I’m sure the Old Trafford faithful are respectfully worried to see Gary Neville walking out in the starting XI.

by Richard Farley on Mar 10, 2010 2:43 PM EST reply actions

Ronaldo ...

… gets an early goal, courtesy of Lloris, but it’s 1-0 after 6’.

by Richard Farley on Mar 10, 2010 3:00 PM EST up reply actions

Real Madrid ...

… has looked really good. They have five good chances w/i the first 13’. If they get another goal, based on how I’ve seen this type of match play out with other RMCF opponents this year, we’re looking at 4-1.

by Richard Farley on Mar 10, 2010 3:02 PM EST up reply actions

Higuain ...

… hits the post after moving past Lloris … wow. Hopefully for Gonzalo, RMCF won’t make him rue that miss.

by Richard Farley on Mar 10, 2010 3:12 PM EST up reply actions

Real Madrid ...

… generated a half-chance 12 seconds in. I like the selection for Pellegrini.

by Richard Farley on Mar 10, 2010 2:47 PM EST reply actions

Meanwhile ...

… 59 minutes after this initial comment, Lyon has adjusted, and although the Lyonnais are not generating many chances, they’ve at least settled down at the back.

Madrid came out strong, but now it appears much of their strength was derived from Lyon early weakness. Has Madrid changed much since? No. It just seems like Lyon’s playing better.

Looks like van der Vaart may come on, which would be a welcome chance for RMCF.

by Richard Farley on Mar 10, 2010 4:04 PM EST up reply actions

RMCF ...

… now hav vdv on, but it’s the same thing. There is a lot of individual play, isolating stars so they can take on their counterparts. Ronaldo just did it again, forcing a corner, but this isn’t working, and it isn’t the way they created their initial chances.

Now, that may be because Lyon’s played far more compact since being exploited early. Sometimes their midfielders are dropping so quick and early that I’ve looked up and seen two flat lines of four.

Are they playing for a draw, or a RMCF mistake?

by Richard Farley on Mar 10, 2010 4:15 PM EST up reply actions

Lyon ...

… has just stolen a goal with one of their only chances of the match. Miralem Pjanic has his fourth goal of UCL as some shoddy and lackadaisical defending by Madrid has los Blancos 15 minutes from elimination

RMCF now need two goals to go though.

by Richard Farley on Mar 10, 2010 4:20 PM EST up reply actions

Kaká ...

… taken off for Raúl – a good move.

Lyon’s going to pack it in now, and Kaká hasn’t been good for much, from what I can tell.

by Richard Farley on Mar 10, 2010 4:22 PM EST up reply actions

Kudos to ...

… Ferguson, for backing off his claims that Berbatov would start.

I like his selection … say right back.

by Richard Farley on Mar 10, 2010 2:49 PM EST reply actions

Early it looks like ...

… Valencia is playing really deep on the right to augment defending Ronaldinho. Maybe that’s just a momentary thing. Let’s see.

by Richard Farley on Mar 10, 2010 2:50 PM EST up reply actions

Rooney ...

… takes advantage of great service from Gary Neville for his third headed goal in 105 minutes in this tie.

I take back what I said about him (above).

by Richard Farley on Mar 10, 2010 3:00 PM EST reply actions

Eh, I wouldn't say you need to take it back.

The assist was good, but Neville’s taken a lot of just terrible…shots? Crosses? It’s been hard to tell.

by Nate on Mar 10, 2010 3:37 PM EST up reply actions

Aggregate:

Rooney 4, AC Milan 2.

by Nate on Mar 10, 2010 3:50 PM EST reply actions

And credit to Nani ...

… for that ball.

United have been in absolute control throughout. I’ve gone from thinking about this match to thinking where they fit in amongst all clubs in Europe.

by Richard Farley on Mar 10, 2010 3:58 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed.

He hasn’t shown much, but that run and that pass were brilliant.

by Nate on Mar 10, 2010 4:02 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed ...

… that he lacks Valencia’s consistency, even if the Ecuadorian lacks Nani’s high-notes.

by Richard Farley on Mar 10, 2010 4:02 PM EST up reply actions

Nani on the left ...

… is something that hadn’t worked earlier this year, but seeing that cross that he just put in (that the keeper barely palmed away), I’m starting to become convinced this could work for United.

More to think about .. in edition to the 5-2.

by Richard Farley on Mar 10, 2010 4:01 PM EST reply actions

Right after I type that ...

… it’s now 6-2, and Park gets a reward for all his hard work.

by Richard Farley on Mar 10, 2010 4:02 PM EST up reply actions

Or as I think of it

Rooney 4, United-Rooney 2, Milan 2

by Nate on Mar 10, 2010 4:02 PM EST up reply actions

Leonardo ...

… should say something like that in post-match. “My team did very well against Manchester United. With Rooney? That’s not quite fair. He’s from another world, right now. My team is very good, but it’s not a fair comparison.”

Or, if Milan takes the same tact they did after the first leg.

“We lost but we’re better.”

by Richard Farley on Mar 10, 2010 4:06 PM EST up reply actions

Backham's on ...

… I think I’m contractually obligated to mention it.

Applause.

Would they be so welcoming if this tie was w/i four goals?

“One David Beckham …” they sing.

by Richard Farley on Mar 10, 2010 4:07 PM EST reply actions

Rooney's off ...

… a few minutes later: 66’

Berba is on.

Neville is off.

Rafael is on.

by Richard Farley on Mar 10, 2010 4:08 PM EST up reply actions

OK ... I admit ...

… seeing Backham and Scholes next to each other on the pitch is kinda cool.

by Richard Farley on Mar 10, 2010 4:09 PM EST up reply actions

Backham ...

… is the bizarro Bechkam. :)

by Richard Farley on Mar 10, 2010 4:09 PM EST up reply actions

Seemingly not ...

… huh? With Inzaghi on now, it seems like Leonardo’s changing gears, though vds was just tested.

by Richard Farley on Mar 10, 2010 4:12 PM EST up reply actions

That was a nice shot ...

… though. Impressive, keeps it on frame.
