Weekend Wrap-Up: The Americas
Guadalajara sprinted out of the gate in México, winning their first five matches of the Bicentenario, recording victories over Toluca, Pachuca, and Puebla along the way. Surely, this week against winless Jaguares ...
I can't do it. I can't use this devise to raise the stakes. The score will speak for itself.
Jaguares posted a shocking 4-0 win over Guadalajara thanks to goals from Jorge Hernandez, Edgar Andrade, Christian Valdéz and Jackson Martínez.
It was one of a number of lop-sided results this weekend, including Monterrey's 3-0 rout of Pachuca, Pumas's 4-1 over Atlante and América's 6-0 pounding of Querétaro, with Antonio López completing his hat-trick within 46 minutes.
Again, Group 2 in México is proving excessively deep, with three of the Bicentenario's five best records residing with that division.
More on an active weekend in the Americas - with big matches in Argentina, Ecuador and Peru - after the jump. First, the poll:
Argentina: Independiente finds itself in first place thanks to their 2-0 win over River Plate thanks to Newells Old Boys getting a 2-1, Sunday win over Godoy Cruz. It was Godoy Cruz's first loss of the Clausura, one that will leave La Tomba with thoughts of what could have been. NOB central defender Roland Schiavi was given a straight red in the 31st minute. Shortly after, Jairo Castillo put Godoy Cruz up 1-0. Then Nicolas Olmedo garners a second yellow card and evened the sides at ten. Joaquin Boghossian scored goals in the 39th and 49th minutes, giving Newells a 2-1 win, vaulting them into fifth place.
Independiente got goals from Dario Gandín and Nestor Silvera, putting them on 17 points, two more than Goody Cruz.
Peru: Sporting Cristal is the only perfect time in the Primera Division after their 1-0 win over León de Huánuco, Luis Advincula's 65th minute goal the difference. As shocking, though, is Universitaro now sitting at the bottom of the league. With their match with Total Chalaco postponed and Cienciano's 2-1 win over Sport Huancayo, La U is the only team in the league without a point.
UPDATE: SantiagoColombia picks up on a bit of poor research on my part - Universitario has been suspended from the competition (hence the postponement). Apparently, La U likes a different airline than the one that officially sponsors the league. I'm not sure I'm using this word correctly, but ... Crickey.
Ecuador: LDU Quito got an early goal from Edison Méndez (rumored to be moving to Brazil soon) before chaos ensued against Deportivo Quito. Red cards shown Efren De la Cruz and Neicer Reasco left Liga with nine at the 43rd minute. Deportivo's Isaac Mina's red card made the match 10-on-9, though the home side was unable to get on the scoresheet, losing 1-0.
In the league's other big match, Emelec cam back from their embarrassing loss last week, routing Barcelona 3-0. There was also a red card shown in this one - to goal scorer Hernán Peirone - making it five reds shown in six matches this weekend in Ecuador.
Colombia: Independiente Medellín and Junior played to a 1-1 draw on Saturday, with the reigning champions getting a late, penalty kick goal from Luis Arias to equalize Junior's Carlos Bacca, who put the visitors ahead in the 74th minute. Junior was down a man at the death, with Victor Cortes having picked-up a second yellow in the 87th minute.
That result gave Real Cartegena a chance to gain some distance at the top of the league, but a 1-0 lead disappeared in stoppage time when a Jorge Torres foul gave Envigado a penalty kick. Neider Morantes converted to give the fifth place team a point, keeping Cartagena within three of Junior and Independiente.
Honduras: Motagua's 1-2 loss at Platense dropped them from first to third, with Vida moving into the league off of an impressive 4-1 win over Real Juventud. Olimpia, a league giant, is no longer sleeping, posting a 4-0 win over Hispano that gives them the league's best goal difference. Marathón, however, continues their slumber, staying on one win in eight after their 2-2 draw Saturday with Victoria.
Brazil, Paulista: Santos got a 89th minute goal from Zé Eduardo to get a point at Portuguesa, who had jumped out early with a 14th minute goal from Heverton. It was only Santos's third blemish of the season, coming in a match where they played much of their first choice team.
Santos's lead is now down to two after Santo André's impressive drubbing of previously third place Botafogo SP. The 4-1 result for Santo André was courtesy goals from Bruno Cesar, Branquinho, Ricardo Conceicao and Nunes.
The loss knocked Botafogo down to fifth thanks to wins from São Paulo (2-0 at Ponte Preta, two goals from Washington) and Corinthians (1-0 at São Caetano thanks to an 86th marker from Dentinho).
Brazil, Miniero: Tupi was a mild upset of leaders Cruziero move within three points of first in a match that saw Cruziero rest a number of regulars ahead of their mid-week Libertadores match with Deportivo Italia. The Serie A side remains two points ahead of Ipatinga and Democrata, both of whom lost on Saturday.
The competition's other Serie A side, Atlético Mineiro, beat Democrata 1-0 and also is on the verge of confirming Edison Méndez as a summer signing.
Brazil, Carioca: Fluminense beat Taça Guanabara champions Botafogo 2-1, getting another goal from former Lyonnais star Fred - the striker's third in three matches. Again, red cards played a part in this match, with star midfielders Dario Conca being dismissed for Flu in the 68th minute, goal scorer German Herrera joining him from Botafogo in the 77th.
Flamengo rolled Resende 4-0 to stay at the top of their group, while Vasco de Gama got a Carlos Alberto penalty kick in their 1-0 win over Boavista.
Brazil, Gaucho: Internacional and Gremio each got 1-0 wins, with first round finalists Novo Hamburgo continuing their strong play, getting a 2-0 win over Inter de Santa Maria.

You didn't mention...
that the reason why the universitario game was postponed, was because they got kicked out of the competition for having a rival sponsor that the one that is used in the Descentralizado (they are planning to appeal)

I didn't mention that ...
… because I didn’t know! Which is the great thing about having a South American correspondent, SantiagoColombia.
Kicked out? La U? WOW!
I’ll link to your comment in my post.

I assumed you knew
and just forgot to said it because you cover so many tounaments, so no problem on telling you, also in case you don’t know, the tournament in Chile has changed from Apertura Clausura to a single one this year because of the earthquake and they will announce how it will work in the next few weeks (because the apertura had already started).

No, I hadn't ...
… noticed regarding Peru, but I think it was because I was concentrating on the top of the table, and as it concerned Universitario I was more focused on Copa Lib. Absolute wow there.
I didn’t mention Chile at all in this one because I need to read more about how that was going to happen … and honestly, I was running out-of-time, a bit. However, it’s good that you bring it up, and ultimately, if this blog had more people reporting in this fashion, it was be pretty awesome.
